· A guinea pig kept on its own will not thrive and be happy, are you prepared to look after more than one? · Guineas need fresh food at least twice daily. Can you afford weekly expenditure on food and bedding? · Guineas must be cleaned out at least twice weekly. Do you have the time to look after them? · Can you provide a safe and spacious living area for your Guineas? · Will you be able to give your Guinea daily exercise either outdoors when suitable or in a pen indoors? · Can you afford the cost of veterinary bills? In Berkshire the consultancy fee alone is more than £15. · Be aware of your Guineas lifespan (5-7 years on average). They are a long term commitment! · Can you make arrangements for the care of Guineas when you are away e.g. on holiday? · Guineas need to be bathed 4-6 weekly, would you be committed to it? |

If you cannot answer ‘yes’ honestly to all these questions then consider whether or not a guinea is the right pet for you. Last year RGPR rehomed 31 guineas (and still had others available for rehoming at the end of the year). Many were brought to us because the commitment needed for keeping guineas wasn’t made clear to their owners when they were bought.
From April 2007 the law is changing and you will have a legal obligation to look after your pet. |
